Feminist Children’s Book: Rad American Women
I wasn’t expecting this to pop into my inbox this morning but wow am I happy that it did! Seriously!? A feminist children’s book that highlights, from A-Z, a roster of impactful, life changing, adversity fighting bad ass women who have changed the course of history for America. Rad American Women A-Z: Rebels, Trailblazers, and Visionaries Who Shaped Our History…and Our Future is an absolute must-have for every child, boy or girl, or even You! The rad women featured range from musicians to athletes to scientists to activists to politicians. You might just learn something new that makes you even more proud to be, or know, a woman.
Aside from the amazing content in general, the illustrations are gorgeous, high contrast, screen print style with bright backgrounds that kids will love to look at long before they can read it themselves. These awesome illustrations are by the super talented Miriam Klein Stahl. The copy was written by Kate Schatz who was amazed that something like this didn’t exist already.
“I figured there must already be something like this, but Google yielded few results,” author Kate Schatz tells us. “Once I began mentioning the idea to friends and fellow parents, it quickly became clear that I wasn’t the only one craving some inspiring, diverse, cool-looking kid lit. The response was overwhelming.”
“Girls need strong, diverse role models, and they need to be able to see themselves reflected in history books and in stories of greatness and success,” she adds. “At the same time, boys need to see these stories of strong women, too, so that they also know that women are capable of anything. Again, these aren’t just role models for girls — these are scientists, activists, artists, musicians, judges, and leaders whose stories can inspire us all.”
Becoming a mom has shown me more than all of the women’s studies classes and feminist book readings in the world that it’s not easy being a woman! And, women have had an especially tough go at it here in America. It’s reaffirming to see here how many women didn’t let their gender dictate what they were capable of in times where women weren’t as fortunate as we are today. We still have a long way to go on maternity care and child rearing rights in this country, but this book shows just how far women have had to come to get us where we are today.
This is the perfect gift for feminists, politicians, intellectuals, Americans, oh and kids, too. Also great for Mother’s Day, graduation gifts, birthday gifts and first day of school gifts. Be prepared to get the “Most Amazing Baby Shower Gift EVER” award if you wrap this up at your next friend’s fete.
It’s available for pre-order on Amazon.com for $12.30 (below) for shipment on April 7th.
